Entrenched in Kantian thinking, many Europeans have convinced themselves that war has become impossible – in Europe at least, if not in Syria. They are wrong. By occupying Crimea, a small part of European territory, Vladimir Putin has declared war – not just on Ukraine, but also on Europe and the global community of democracies.
